What is Play Therapy?
Play therapy is a research-backed, child-centred approach that helps children process emotions, build coping skills, and develop resilience naturally and safely. Research has shown that play is the natural language of children. Unlike everyday play, play therapy is guided by a trained therapist who is attuned to the child’s emotions, experiences, and nervous system responses. This structured, therapeutic process fosters trust, emotional integration, and self-regulation.
Grounded in neuroscience, attachment theory, and child development research, play therapy meets children where they are, providing a safe space to explore feelings and navigate life’s challenges.
Who Can Benefit from Play Therapy?
Play therapy supports children facing:
- Anxiety, trauma, and emotional regulation challenges
- ADHD, Autism, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
- Sensory processing differences and social difficulties
- Behavioral struggles and attachment disruptions
Play Therapy for Trauma, Abuse & Neglect
Children who have experienced violence, abuse, neglect, or relational trauma often struggle with emotional regulation, attachment disruptions, and nervous system dysregulation. Synergetic Play Therapy provides a trauma-informed, non-pathologising approach that prioritises safety, connection, and healing through play.
In a therapeutic relationship grounded in co-regulation, the child has a safe space to express and process overwhelming emotions that may feel too big to verbalise. The therapist attunes to the child’s nervous system, helping them move through activation states (fight, flight, freeze) while fostering body awareness, self-regulation, and emotional integration. Through carefully facilitated play, children can reclaim a sense of empowerment, self-worth, and emotional stability, ultimately strengthening their ability to form secure relationships and confidently navigate the world.
Through Synergetic Play Therapy, which integrates interpersonal neurobiology, attachment theory, and somatic regulation, children learn to connect with their inner experiences, strengthen self-awareness, and build nervous system capacity to navigate everyday life.
The Power of Play Therapy
Research confirms the effectiveness of play therapy in supporting emotional well-being and resilience. Studies show that children who engage in play therapy experience significant improvements in emotional regulation, behavioural functioning, and social skills (Bratton et al., 2005; Landreth, 2012).
If your child is struggling, play therapy offers a compassionate and evidence-based pathway to healing and growth.

Counselling for Teens
Adolescence is a time of emotional, social, and neurological growth, often accompanied by challenges such as anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, identity concerns, peer pressure, or trauma. Our counselling services provide teens with a safe, confidential space to explore their thoughts and feelings while developing healthy coping strategies.
We take a holistic, trauma-informed approach, integrating somatic therapy to address both the psychological and physiological impacts of stress. By incorporating breathwork, movement, sensory awareness, and nervous system regulation, teens gain control over their emotions, reduce overwhelm, and build self-trust.
Support for Children with Problematic or Harmful Sexualised Behaviours
We provide specialised interventions for children displaying problematic or harmful sexualised behaviours, focusing on underlying trauma, emotional regulation, and behaviour management. Our therapeutic approach is trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate, and non-judgmental, helping children understand boundaries, develop healthy coping strategies, and process difficult emotions in a safe and supportive environment. Early intervention is key to fostering positive outcomes and emotional well-being.
NDIS support
We support children and adolescents with disabilities through therapeutic interventions tailored to their individual needs and NDIS goals.
Traditional talk therapy may not always meet the needs of neurodivergent children. Play therapy provides a sensory-safe, child-led, and neuroaffirming approach that respects each child’s unique way of processing the world.
- For ADHD: Supports impulse control, frustration tolerance, and self-regulation.
- For Autism: Encourages emotional expression, social skills, and flexible thinking in a low-demand environment.
- For ODD & Behavioral Challenges: Creates a safe space for emotional processing without power struggles, fostering trust and relational safety.
Lilly Pilly Therapeutic Services offers therapy and counselling for NDIS participants with self-managed and plan-managed funding. Our approach is trauma-responsive, neuroaffirming, and attachment-based, ensuring each child receives personalised, developmentally appropriate care.
